As blogs, Facebook, Linkedin, etc, more and more personal activities are put online, so eventually, personal image will be clear online, include your social contacts. What will the effect be?
People will judge you according to your activities, because that does reflect personal interests, value. Will it become important factor to find a job someday? Will it force people to behave more ethicallly? I think so, so suggest everyone google yourself regularly.

I think it is pretty difficult to build a strong brand online especially with so many competitors.
At the end of the day, I believe it comes out either to sheer creativity or the use of excessive amount of money for branding purposes.
You can use very little money but get very good results in branding if you are creative.
If not, you can throw in lots of money to make the brand known to people.
