I reminded that last time I encountered the sun eclipse is July 11, 1991 (actually I didn't remember the day of course, but checked from Wikipedia). At that time, we were in classroom, huge storm, but suddenly the sky turned total dark, not like storm that simple. Few years later, then I realized it myabe sun eclipse.
Now, another time is coming! btw, from Wikipedia (again), I know it's not so rare actually, the more important is the location that you are. This can be seen often at entire Earth, but definitely not for every location. This time, the total eclipse can be seen at China, but not at Singapore. Here is a great website setup just for this event: 日全食网 (in chinese, hope you know this language that using by billions people). Of course, wekipedia.org is always the great resource for your knowledge.

At this map, you will know the area that the total eclipse can be seen. Hope you are lucky enough. For Singapore, can only see a small portion. But not that bad if you are out of that central range, at this map, you can also click the location you are, it will show the timing that you can see something, like the below picture.
