Tampines becomes Singapore's cycling town

Interesting, today read from news, tampines becomes Singapore's first cycling town, cyclist and pedestrain can share footways. This is the decision after two years trial. I don't know how Singaporean look at it, as a person grew up at china, it's quite interesting for me.

First, I don't know before this, cyclists have to share the road with cars, trucks. Are they safe?

Second, in order to make the decision, they used two years. And before implement it, more effort is on the way, that's infrastructure, education and enforcement. In china, government never do in this way, of course, I am not saying this is wrong. But interesting to me.
